The Content of Their Character
Objectives:
§ to research an African-American and determine an identifying positive character trait
§ to use paraphrasing, summarizing, direct quotation in recording research
§ to produce a report that includes both biographical information and character defining qualities
§ to produce a poster illustrating findings that incorporates words and illustrations
This is a two-part assignment that will focus on African-Americans who have had an impact on society, and the character trait in which they embody.
The Poster – Finished poster due January 31
project title: The Content of their Character
the word - the one character trait - they have chosen in LARGE letters and the definition
information about the person you have chosen including:
a VERY brief summary of each one’s life (include born-died), time period, etc.
a summary of how this character illustrates the word
a direct quote by the person or about the person
an illustration or picture
the student’s name & class period
This sheet, or a copy of the rubric is to be attached to the back of the project.
The Essay – Finished essay due Feb 22
You will complete a “Bio Sheet” about your person using one (1) internet source, and one (1) print source. As you take notes, write down the source’s title, author, and publication information. The publication information varies, depending on the type of source used. The publication information for a book usually includes the name of the publisher, the city where the publisher is located, and the year of publication. N a book, this information can be found on the title page and the copyright page, which usually follows the title page. The publication information for an online source can generally be found at the bottom of the first page of the website. You should include the author’s name, title of the article, name of the website, date of publication or latest update, name of any organization associated with the site, the date of access, and the complete URL.
As you are doing your research print/copy pictures of your person for use on the poster that you will be creating.
Review the list of character traits provided and discussed in class. Determine which trait best represents your person.
Your essay must include: biographical information, your person’s contribution to society, and how they personify the character trait that you selected. Start by creating an outline that summarizes the main points about your person and the ideas that support them.
The rough draft of your essay will be due to me at the end of class on March 3. This rough draft will not be accepted late, if you will be absent, you must find a way to turn it in anyway.
Your finished essay must be typed, and follow this format:
All pages are neat and clean.
Al pages are included, in order, and held together with a staple.
Any last minute corrections of errors are invisible or barely noticeable.
All pages, starting with page 2 are numbered sequentially, including the page for works cited.
The required identifying information (Your name, teacher’s name, class and date) appears on separate double spaced lines on the first page of the paper.
A one-inch margin at the top, bottom, and both sides on every page.
All text is double-spaced, including long quotations and entries in the list of works cited.
